Renowned Street art maestro L’Atlas works prolifically across the globe. Fusing a predominantly stark color palette with the fluidity of calligraphy, L’Atlas has established himself as one of the most critically acclaimed European street artists working today. The artist has completed commissions for the Cartier Foundation in addition to many other prestigious arts institutions. In 2008, he completed a large-scale performance and installation in conjunction with the Pompidou Center, Paris. His work is held in private collections in Paris, Boulogne, London, Tokyo, Osaka, Barcelona, Venice, Geneva, Adelaide (Australia), Sardinia, Jakarta, Switzerland, Brussels, Rio de Janeiro, Germany, Beijing, New York, and Washington DC. After tagging the streets of Paris in his adolescence, L’Atlas travelled extensively, studying calligraphy with a number of masters in Morocco, Egypt and Syria, specifically focusing on the Kufic style, the oldest decorative form of the numerous Arabic scripts. L’Atlas’ blends this knowledge with his extensive background in street art to create a uniquely calligraphic aesthetic. Both his works on canvas and his impermanent street installations consist of predominantly elongated straight horizontals and verticals with angled edges. Executed primarily in black and white, the artist’s bold works provide a stark contrast to the muddied colors of urban centers, setting him apart from his contemporaries. As opposed to artists who will spray graffiti on city buildings, L’Atlas inverts standard street art practices by taking fragments of the city with him. The artist will spray paint manholes and street fragments before beautifully capturing their imprint on a large black canvas. In 2009, L’Atlas completed a site-specific installation in New York’s Washington Square Park. The widely praised performance was staged beneath the Washington Square Arch and featured one of L’Atlas’ signature calligraphic street fragments, which the artist then photographed from above. L’Atlas’ work has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, Beaux Arts Magazine, French Morning New York, and Animal New York. He has participated in numerous international art fairs and biennials including the SCOPE Art Fair, New York; the Venice Biennale; Art Beijing; Maison Japon, and the Moscow International Biennale for Young Artists. |
