Jasper White investigates spaces synonymous with daily life. Stunningly vibrant, White’s photographs explore environments and belongings common to most people. Working primarily with Lambda prints, a process unparalleled in color saturation, these places are rendered in staggering vividness and clarity. Despite the inherent sense of voyeurism that comes with gazing at pictures of such private spaces, the technical mastery of the photographs, and the staged quality of each scene implies an awareness the space will be viewed. White has exhibited at the Getty Images Gallery, London and The Print Space, London. He has been awarded various prizes and bursaries, including several AOP Photography awards, an award from the London Photographic Association and the Observer Hodge Photographic Award. As a child, the artist and his family moved constantly. The influence of such a nomadic upbringing is manifest in White’s fascination with variations across quotidian spaces, adding a profoundly personal element to the works. During a trip to Australia, White discovered the local male obsession with sheds. These practical spaces are often treated as male-only sanctuaries and, in some cases, an unofficial local bar. The work on display in gallery nine5 is drawn from the artist’s Men’s Sheds series. The artist’s photographs have appeared in advertisements for the Guardian newspaper, the UKTV channel, HSBC bank, British Midland International Airlines and the British Postal Office, among others. White has exhibited at the Getty Images Gallery, London and The Print Space, London. He has been awarded various prizes and bursaries, including several AOP Photography awards, an award from the London Photographic Association and the Observer Hodge Photographic Award (in association with Olympus). White’s works reside in various public and private collections worldwide. |
